We constantly upgrade our smartphones, especially when the previous one stops operating or we wish to upgrade to a better device.

Some users feel uncomfortable about this, especially if they have messages left in the prior unit that they want to keep.

Most of your data may be easily transferred via Google, allowing you to continue where you left off. Since you have to set up everything from the start and ensure that all data is safely moved to the new device, it can take a lot of work. While you can sync your contacts and photographs using your Google account, transferring text messages will take longer because they only sync slowly.

Help is available, and this article will show you how to move Google messages to a new phone if you want to keep all SMS messages on your old handset.

How do I transfer Google Messages to a New Phone?

Method 1: Transfer Messages to New Phone using Android Settings to Backup texts to Google Drive

All the information on your phone, including contacts, device settings, call history, and text messages, can be backed up to Google Drive using Android. However, you must be using Google’s Messages app to utilize it for texts. For Pixel and other stock Android phones, Google Messages is the default messaging software; however, if you have a Samsung Galaxy handset, you’ll need to download and install it.

Here are the steps on how to back up text messages with the Settings app

How to Transfer Google Messages to New Phone

    • Select “Google” in the Settings app on your phone.
    • Choose “Backup.”
    • Check to see if the “Backup to Google Drive” or the “Backup to Google One” toggle is on here (The Backup to Google One option shows up if you have a Google one subscription plan).
    • Verify that the correct Google account is chosen for backup under “Account Storage” at the top of the screen.
    • You may view all the data backed up if you scroll down to the “Backup information” section. You may view the size of your text message backup under “SMS messages.”
    • To manually back up your data, tap the “Back up now” option. If not, your phone will automatically back up whenever it connects to WiFi, sitting idle, and charging for two hours.

Here are the procedures on how to restore text messages with the Settings app

    • Use the same Google account you used to create your text message backup to log into your new phone throughout the setup process.
    • When prompted if you wish to restore data associated with your account during device setup, select “Restore.”
    • You will see every text message you have received after setting up your account.

Method 2: Transfer Messages to the New Phone Using SMS Backup and Restore the App

I advise utilizing a third-party program like SMS Backup & Restore. That is if you still need to use the Google Messages app on your device. It is simple to create backups and restore texts to a new phone, which is available in Google Play for free.

Here are the procedures on how to backup text messages using SMS Backup and Restore

The SMS Backup & Restore app can be downloaded, installed, and opened.

    • Select “Get Started” from the menu. You can decide whether to give the app permission to access your call history and contacts, make and manage calls, and send and view SMS messages when you first start the app. It would be best if you allowed the app to transmit and see SMS messages to back up your text messages.
    • Find and click the “Set up a Backup” button on the app’s home screen.
    • Check that the Messages toggle is on. Select “Advanced Options” and turn off “Attachments and media” if you want messages and not attachments like images and videos saved up.
    • Click “Next.”
    • By selecting the toggle, choose one of the three cloud storage options—Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive—to store your backups.
    • Clicking the “Log in” button will allow you to log into your cloud storage account.
    • Select “Only access to files and folders opened or created with SMS Backup & Restore” from the pop-up menu.
    • Choose whether to save all backups or remove old blockages (up to 30 days old) under “Delete backups older than.”
    • You may now choose whether you want to back up just over WiFi and whether your phone needs charging at the bottom of the “Set Up Backup” screen.
    • Click “Next.”
    • Choose between a daily, weekly, or hourly back schedule.
    • The backup procedure begins when you tap the “Back up now” button.

Here are the steps to restore text messages using SMS Backup and Restore

    • During setup, check that the SMS Backup & Restore software on your new Android phone. Install the app from Google Play if it isn’t already there.
    • Tap the menu icon (three bars) at the top left of the app after opening it.
    • Make your selection for Restore.
    • Then, login in with the account you use to save your backups using the cloud storage option you previously used on your old phone. The app will confirm the link to your report.
    • On the “Messages” menu, select “On” and then “Restore.”
    • You’ll receive a notification requesting you to make the app your default SMS app. Tap “OK.”
    • Once the SMS restoration process has started, click “Close” upon finishing.
    • Select the Messages app under Settings > Apps. When you choose “Set as default,” all of your previous messages are on the new phone.
